The AVALANCHE LAKE TRAIL begins at the same trailhead as the Trail of the Cedars. The biggest problem with this trail is finding a place to park - this is a very popular trail. The trail is nearly 3 miles one way and most of it is in a forest. The elevation gain to the lake is about 500 feet, but it doesn't seem difficult - actually, 500 feet over 3 miles is considered fairly easy - compare this with the Loop Trail which gains 2000 feet over 4 miles! You'll notice I didn't name that as one of my favorite hikes - I hiked it uphill once - and that's enough. Along the trail to Avalanche Lake you'll find huge boulders just a ways off the trail - reminders of the glaciers that carved their way down the sides of the surrounding mountains. Speaking of mountains, at the start of the trail, Mount Cannon is on your left and Mount Brown is on your right. Because of the forest, you won't really see them. You will initially hike along Avalanche Creek but it soon disappears from view. Near the lake the trail breaks out of the trees and you can see Bearhat Mountain on your left. Then...there's the lake!! Absolutely beautiful, with many waterfalls plunging from Sperry Glacier at its head, this is a spot that is often photographed. I never seem to capture its beauty, though. The lighting never seems right. Read about Avalanche Lake. BE CAREFUL!!! This trail is bear country! |
