AVALANCHE
LAKE is accessed via the Avalanche Lake trail, which climbs gently through forest about 3
miles. The lake is surrounded on three sides by mountain walls and the sight of MANY
waterfalls plunging toward the lake is well worth the
hike. One of the things that always strikes me when I get to the lake is its clarity. You can see tree trunks on the bottom a long ways out. When you've had your fill of the beauty at this end of the lake, continue to the head of the lake. One year we crossed a small stream fed by the waterfalls in order to satisfy my son's need to skip stones. (He remembered finding good stones here 5 years before.) The main thing we found was EXTREMELY cold water - numbingly cold. If you venture into the stream or the lake PLEASE be careful. Besides the cold danger, be cautious and practice bear safety. On some vacations we can't even attempt the trail because it is closed due to bears. Read more about the Avalanche Lake Trail. |
