The HIGHLINE TRAIL can be accessed from a number of places.  The easiest way to hike this trail that wanders just below the Continental Divide is to begin at Logan Pass.  Cross through a high meadow, where mountain goats are frequently encountered. A short descent is followed by a mild ascent until you reach the Rim Rocks area.  Don't let the cable fastened to the wall scare you. Use it if you need to, but the trail is really not that bad.  Soon you lose sight of the road below and get the feel of the backcountry.

This trail is loaded with marmots, teeny waterfalls, and gorgeous views.  Bring water and wear sturdy shoes.   Though the trail is fairly level, it's loaded with rocks and, by the time you've hiked the switchback at Haystack Butte, your feet are getting sore.  Persevere 'til you reach the Grinnell Glacier Overlook spur trail.  It's a short side trip. Oh yeah, and it's steep.  Read about the Overlook Trail.

Next you will reach Granite Park Chalet, then it's 4 miles DOWN to The Loop and the road.  You can turn around at the Chalet and head back to Logan Pass, but we never have the energy (the trail to the chalet is over 7 miles).  The easiest thing is to park at The Loop and pay for the hiker shuttle to the Pass.   Why?   Because it's tough to find a place to park at Logan Pass, and when you get to the chalet all you have to do is hike 4 miles to your car at the Loop instead of going all the way back to the Pass.

BE CAREFUL!!!  This trail, particularly the LOOP TRAIL portion is bear country!
